Painting swans

I thought I would share a few of my watercolour paintings of swans. These, of course, are such graceful birds but what really appeals to me is the bulk of the body, the sheer size of the bird next to smaller wild fowl.

I also enjoy the amazing loop of the neck, the fact that you can see glimpses of other birds through it, and that the dark watery reflection beneath the swan throws the stark white into contrast.

My very favourite thing, however, are the patterns made by a sea of swans, with heads, necks and orange beaks all adding to a dense mass of movement and light – a spectacular sight!
