Walker 12/07/12 – IRS codes and Apple’s ‘paid books’ account

Setting up the Apple ‘Paid Books’ account was a painful process. Becky needed ISBN codes for the books and to get these, all we had to do was to ring up ‘Nielson Book Services’ and order them over the phone (10 ISBN numbers for £118).

Becky also needed an American tax code from the IRS, and that was were the fun started. First, we had to identify what sort of tax code we needed; you would not believe how many types of IRS tax references are available! We thought, at first, that we needed an ITIN so downloaded the appropriate form and sent it to the American Embassy in London, along with Becky’s passport.

Becky went ahead and started the application process for paid books, even though we hadn’t yet received an IRS reference, and whilst going through the process, there was an option to request a code from the IRS! We found out that, being English Nationals, we actually needed an EIN (Employer Identification Number). We downloaded the form (form SS-4), rang the IRS in America and after a short telephone call, Becky had a code – done and dusted.

Unfortunately, Becky then went on to request a ‘free book’ account, immediately after requesting a ‘paid book’ account. This was a bad move, and is not to be recommended; it confused the Apple system and lead to a month of emails to iBookstore Support! Eventually they deleted our original account, allowing us to request the ‘paid book’ account only, which is what Becky should have done in the first place – artists!!
