Jelbert 03/08/10 – first picture

This weekend we put our first page together for our book ‘The Secret Sketchbook of Evangelina May’. It’s really good to see the start of things. When some friends of ours suggested we publish the stories as an interactive app I felt overwhelmed by the sheer mountain of work it would involve. Would we be able to do this? How would I find the time? Seeing this page come to life on our Apple iPad, I feel really excited about the possibilities.

The book/ the stories/ the application (in our minds it is a book) is aimed at young children. It is about a little girl, Evangelina May, who draws pictures of her adventures in a secret sketchbook which she keeps hidden under her bed. This first interactive picture is of Evangelina in bed with her toys, telling them stories by torchlight.

The illustration combines a child’s drawing with a realistic drawing of Evangelina (based on my youngest daughter). You click on the torch and the whole scene lights up, with a ‘CLICK’ of the button (Adam recorded the click of his mouse button!) The children think it’s great, so there’s hope yet…
